“For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.”—Romans 6:7–8
God has set you free from all sin! So now the challenge is to live our lives in light of what Christ has done. If we are free, we must live in that freedom. We must consider Paul’s words to the Church in Galatians 5:13, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” The Bible tells us to use our freedom for good. More specifically we are now called to tell others about this same freedom we have received by the redemption of Christ. Just as Barabbas was set free from his death sentence (which he deserved), we have been set free from our death verdict. Jesus is our only appeal. Jesus is our substitution on the cross. Now we can celebrate and tell others of this freedom! Live in the joy, freedom, hope and purpose that Christ has provided you. Watch and see if others don’t notice this in you and want what you have.
RESPOND:
• Who do you need to tell about the freedom you have found in Jesus?
• Jesus tell us in John 8 that the truth will set us free. This can only happen if we are abiding in the word of God (John 8:31). One way to abide in God’s word is to memorize scripture. What scripture do you need to memorize and put in your heart? Maybe you can do this together with your group!
• The gospel doesn’t end with the death of Jesus, because the good news is that He rose from the dead and is alive right now! Compare and contrast what it looks like for us to live in the newness of life with Christ and what it looks like to live in darkness and sin. Which one does your life look like right now?
